US writers on strike

WGA strike Photo: Erik Patterson

What's it like to be on strike? Blogger and comedy writer Ken Levine reveals all.
A number of writers were eating doughnuts while on line. Doesn’t that defeat the “exercise and cardiovascular” benefit of marching? Actor Gary Sinese made homemade cookies. They were delicious!...

Lots of folks from SAG (Screen Actors' Guild) were on the line. They were the ones not eating doughnuts...

I didn’t see anyone with a megaphone trying to whip us into a frenzy. I guess they got wise. The only way to get this bunch to shout out protest chants is to hire the Laker Girls to lead them.

Of course, there's really no need for the rah-rah people. The producers themselves have managed to galvanize the union into such a state that to a man writers will fight this contract till the end of time.

  1. Personally I think that if your going to get into a "starving-artist" profession like being a writer, for example that you should only get paid for the material you write, and your time. Seems like this battle is more along the lines of a "pre-pubescent" battle against the "grown-ups". Most writers I would put into the same category as I would the person who makes my pizza's at the local pizza joint. You get paid for your time, and your value. Period. And maybe, if your work is good, you'll even get a nice tip from me other than dont eat yellow snow. But if your not happy with the money you make, get a different job, or do better work. Dont bitch and whine about it like a kid. Most you writers are a dime-a-dozen, maybe this is a good time for network execs to be looking for fresh, new, writers with new outlooks for shows. I would have tossed you out making sure to hit you in your greedy asses on the way,... twice. Dont forget to take your pencils with you. Go write a best-seller, or make me a damn pizza. :)

  2. Thanks for that, er, contribution.

You might find this post from American screenwriter John August illuminating.
