The shortlists have been announced for the 2010 BAFTA Television Awards.
Despite lobbying by the Guild and several Guild members, the 'writer' award remains in the 'TV Craft Awards' rather than the main BAFTAs. The nominations are:
Peter Bowker – Occupation
BBC One/Kudos Film and Television
Heidi Thomas – Cranford
BBC One/BBC Productions/WGBH Boston in association with Chestermead
Guy Hibbert – Five Minutes Of Heaven
BBC Two/Big Fish Films/Ruby Films
Writing Team – The Thick Of It
BBC Four/BBC Productions
(The official announcement doesn't name the writing team but it is normally credited as Jesse Armstrong, Simon Blackwell, Roger Drew, Sean Gray, Armando Iannucci, Ian Martin, Will Smith, Tony Roche)

FROM THE CHAIR OF THE TV COMMITTEE
ReplyDeleteThe Guild has regularly and lobbied BAFTA to move their writer's award to the main BAFTAs, where the creator of any programme belongs. we've had no success.
It's also ludicrous that BAFTA has only ONE writer's award; pitting series like CRANFORD against THICK OF IT. If you want your protest heard, tweet BAFTA at:
@baftaonline
We're not giving up on this one.
Maybe they'd take notice if WG members were to resign en masse.
ReplyDeleteThis is an ongoing disgrace.
ReplyDeleteI've thought long and hard about what you've said, Stephen, but I was always taught never to walk out of a negotiation! Like the WGGB, BAFTA is a member-driven organisation. I'd suggest BAFTA members attending its AGM and asking the question there. And everyone can write in. So let's get those writing voices heard!
